Elasticsearch consulting

An independent review of your Elasticsearch environment.

An independent review of your Elasticsearch architecture, performance, resilience and operational practices, with prioritised recommendations.

What the review covers

The review is shaped around your environment and the questions your team needs answered. Depending on the agreed scope and available diagnostics, it can cover:

  1. Architecture & configuration: Topology, node roles, version considerations and configuration, with attention to how the current design fits the workload.
  2. Data & index design: Shards, mappings, templates and index lifecycle, including choices that influence how data is stored and queried.
  3. Performance & capacity: Search and indexing behaviour, resource utilisation and capacity constraints, based on the diagnostics available for review.
  4. Resilience & recovery: Allocation, replicas, snapshots, recovery configuration and practices, to identify areas that may need operational follow-up.
  5. Operational visibility: Monitoring, alerting and diagnostic coverage, including whether the available signals help operators investigate issues.
  6. Security & surrounding stack: Security configuration, Logstash, Filebeat, Kibana and relevant ingestion components where they form part of the agreed environment.

Assessment depth depends on the agreed scope and the diagnostic information available. Any additional access or active testing is agreed separately. This review is not a penetration test and does not guarantee recovery validation.

You do not need to prepare a presentation or make changes before the review. The first discussion is to understand what you operate, what prompted the assessment and which questions matter most. The agreed diagnostic set and any supporting context are then shared using a transfer method arranged for the engagement. The review focuses on evidence in that material; where information is missing, that limitation is made clear rather than assumed away.

A clear, four-step process

  1. Agree scope. We discuss your environment, concerns and the components to include. Scope is settled before a quote is prepared.
  2. Provide diagnostic data. Your team supplies Elasticsearch diagnostics and relevant supporting information through an agreed transfer method.
  3. Assessment and report. I review the findings and prepare written, prioritised recommendations.
  4. Walkthrough and next steps. We discuss the report on a call. If you want help applying recommendations, implementation is quoted separately.

What you receive

You receive a written report describing findings, identified gaps and recommendations in priority order, followed by a walkthrough call. Reports are structured to make the key points clear first, with technical findings for the people doing the work. The exact report format is agreed as part of the engagement.

Recommendations are intended to help your team decide what to address first and what warrants further investigation. The report reflects the agreed scope and available evidence; it does not provide a universal score or promise a particular performance outcome. Your team can use the walkthrough to discuss context, clarify findings and decide which improvements make sense for its environment.

Frequently asked questions

Which environments do you support?

The review is available for self-managed Elasticsearch, including older versions, and OpenSearch. Related Elastic Stack components can be included in the agreed scope. Contact me to discuss your specific environment.

Is the work remote?

The health check is usually delivered remotely. On-site work can be arranged if it is useful for the engagement.

How long does it take?

It is typically delivered within two weeks once the agreed diagnostic data is available. Timing depends on the scope and the information provided.

Can you implement the recommendations?

Yes. Follow-on implementation support is available and scoped separately, so your team can choose what to take forward and when.

How much does it cost?

There is no fixed package price published here. We discuss your environment and agree the scope before I prepare a quote.
